OVERVIEW
Carla practices general civil and commercial litigation, and also provides corporate and regulatory counseling. Her main experience is in health law, distribution franchise law and insurance litigation. However, at Casellas Alcover & Burgos, P.S.C., Carla has represented and advised clients in a wide range of commercial matters, at the trial and appellate levels, before both state and federal courts, in local administrative proceedings, and in arbitrations.
Carla received her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Latin American Studies from Yale University in 2005. She then graduated magna cum laude from the Law School of the University of Puerto Rico in 2008, where she was Director and Editor-in-Chief of the University of Puerto Rico Law Review. In 2011, Carla obtained her LL.M. degree from Columbia University, graduating as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. She focused her studies in Environmental and Land Use Law. During her year at Columbia, she worked as research aide at Columbia’s Center for Climate Change Law, and interned at the Natural Resources Defense Council’s New York Urban Program.
Upon graduation, Carla gained invaluable experience in both trial and appellate litigation as a judicial law clerk for judges sitting in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Carla serves as Director on the Board of the Puerto Rico Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. She also served by appointment of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, as Member of the Rules Advisory Committee of the court (2019-2022).
